SAMPLE SIZE OF WIND TURBINE

The size of the wind turbine varies according to the produced power. Indicatively, for every kilowatt, the diameter of the blades does not exceed 2 to 3 meters. Those destined for homes will be installed at a height of over 10 meters and at the point where the wind is not prevented.

ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFIT

You can take advantage of the energy produced by the wind turbines by either sailing electricity to PPC or meeting the needs of a building. A small-scale wind system, in conjunction with other energy saving systems, can lead to energy autonomous houses. Already in some Aegean islands, numerous houses have achieved their electrical autonomy.

Small wind turbines are designed to operate effectively even at relatively low wind speeds (average speed to 5 m / sec). In the case of an energy-independent housing, a 3-4kW system is enough to meet the needs of it.

According to Greenpeace, a small wind turbine replacing a diesel generator in a country house helps to prevent the release of two kilograms of carbon dioxide for every kilowatt hour of use.

A similar benefit is saving power from Public Power Corporation( PPC), which is mainly produced by burning hydrocarbons. Evidence shows, a 1,5 - 2 kW wind turbine with a very good wind field, can save power equal to the power consumed by a family in Athens.

LICENSING SMALL WIND TURBINES

Domestic wind turbines do not require residence permit, but only needing to accept the terms of the PPC electricity network joining. At unconnected islands, special permission from RAE / PPC will be needed. For installations under 20 kW, it is considered mild and it is not required environmental conditions study, unless it is located in an area of the network NATURA 2000.

WIND PARKS

A wind farm or wind park is a group of large scale wind turbines in the same location used to produce energy. A large wind farm may consist of several hundred individual wind turbines and cover an extended area of hundreds of square miles, but the land between the turbines may be used for agricultural or other purposes. A wind farm can also be located offshore.

Market analysts are predicting a steady increase in the number of onshore facilities, to meet the global demand for electricity generated from renewable sources. Thanks to technological innovation, the generating capacity of onshore wind power plants can now match many conventional power plants.

Onshore wind power plants make a significant contribution to a more sustainable, ecologically sound power-generation landscape. However, like any other power generation project, wind power plants are, first and foremost, expected to generate profit. Offshore wind power refers to the construction of wind farms in bodies of water to generate electricity from wind. Better wind speeds are available offshore compared to on land. So offshore wind power’s contribution in terms of electricity supplied is higher, and NIMBY (opposition by residents to a proposal for a new development because it is close to them) opposition to construction is usually much weaker. However, offshore wind farms are relatively expensive.
